Purpose: The purpose of this session was to provide an interactive and engaging opportunity for visionary serial entrepreneur and restaurateur Steve Salis to share an in-depth look at the business empire he built shortly after dropping out of college with &Pizza and Catalogue.
Steve discussed the market and community impact of his ventures, his journey to success, and the key challenges he faces today.
After learning about the interests of from the students, moderator Thomas Herd then sought to tie in Steve’s insights and findings into the journeys being started by the Breakthrough Scholars so that they could utilize them as real, practical tools to navigate to their desired professions and level of impact.
In particular, Thomas sought to tease out helpful insights that could be applied in a relevant matter to the stated career goals of the Breakthrough students from asking Steve the following questions:
- What distinguishes his work
- What type of network-building and resources were most helpful to him along his path
- The importance of a support system- who he believed was/is indispensable to him
- How to create a life of balance and richness and joy amidst the pressures and responsibilities he carries
- What tools/specialized knowledge/awareness is important to have in order to navigate today’s rapidly evolving world in order to succeed in his industry
- How much of success is based on actual material or societal success? What may be even more important factors responsible for lasting happiness and fulfilment that deserve at least equal consideration and investment?
Beyond the event- which was enjoyed and valued by all- the Breakthrough students received Steve’s ‘trajectory manual’ – read here (or check below) – so they have some foundational material if Steve’s story and lessons resonated with them and they develop interest in pursuing a similar entrepreneurial career in hospitality as Steve.
